CHAPTER XII

Anya knew there was no way she could speed up her traveling time. The resort she was heading for couldn’t be reached by plane, which meant part of the distance had to be covered by car. Every step of the way took time she didn’t have to spare. She reached the resort in the middle of the afternoon. What frustrated her the most upon arrival was when she was told there were no vacancies, and that there wouldn’t be any until the end of the season. It didn’t matter that the staff member who was giving her this news was being very courteous. All Anya cared about was getting her way, and this wasn’t happening.

Anya wasn’t about to be pushed aside after finally getting to the end of the trail. She stiffened her spine, and in her best, most haughty sounding tone of voice, attempted to bluff her way into a room. “I am sure you don’t know who I am, or you wouldn’t be saying this to me.”

The desk clerk was not going to allow herself to be intimidated, nor did she care who Anya was. There were simply no more rooms available. The lady would have to find different accommodations if she could. “For all I know, you could be the King of Morocco. It won’t make any difference. We are booked solid until mid-April. People make reservations a year in advance to stay with us. If I could think of a closet that wasn’t claimed at the moment, I might consider helping you out, but even those are taken.”

As Anya wasn’t getting anywhere by being belligerent, she tried to appeal to the woman’s empathic side. “I am feeling ill and have been travelling all day. I can’t stand the thought of getting back into that car and going down the mountain.”

As far as the desk clerk was concerned, Anya could have saved her breath. “You are going to have to find the pluck to pull up your big girl panties and take the rejection for what it is. There are no empty rooms in this inn. Even the cottages are double and triple booked.”

Cottages? Anya’s head shot up in interest. The last trail had ended at a cabin. Maybe the same would apply here. “Are you certain they are all full?”

The clerk didn’t think twice about her answer. “Most definitely. Those get booked first because of the privacy they give our guests.”

Although it went against Anya’s nature, she resorted to begging. “Please. I can’t leave now. There is a storm forming. I will never reach an establishment with vacancies before it reaches us. I could be stuck in the middle of a snow bank on the side of the road for a day with that car.”

Ordinarily the clerk would have taken pity on Anya considering the circumstances. She knew there was a storm approaching. They had been bracing for it all day. Anya was right about the forecast. However, the blizzard they were expecting wasn’t about to hit this part of the mountain for another two hours.
